Zone Captains: How it Works
On Labor Day 2020, the Almeda Fire ripped through Talent and Phoenix, Oregon, destroying thousands of homes and businesses and removing most of the affordable housing in the Rogue Valley as cleanly as if done with a scalpel. When the fire burned, it burned completely. Often there was nothing left—entire neighborhoods reduced to ash for seven miles.
Like a Phoenix, more resilient communities are now rising from these ashes. Borrowing from the successes of other fire-affected communities, FRC launched the Almeda Fire Zone Captains program as a strategic communications pipeline between fire-affected voices and those making decisions about the recovery. It has since become an integral part of our Valley’s recovery.
